IELTS Writing Task 1 – Marked and Corrected Student Answer

by James England

Here is a real example of a marked and corrected IELTS Writing Task 1 essay question.

I would like to thank the student, Sabina Khadka, for giving me permission to use it for the benefit of others visiting our website.

The question and Sabina’s unmarked response is presented and this is followed by our assessor’s marked and corrected version.

Question

The pie charts below show units of electricity production by fuel source in Australia and France in 1980 and 2000.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant

IELTS Task 1 - Electricity Fuel Source in Australia and France

Student’s Answer

The given chart compares the electricity production by different fuel resources in two different countries France and Australia in 1980 and 2000.

In 1980, coal was the most popular fuel resources used in Australia (50 units). The least common source was oil (10 unit). On the other hand, in France coal and hydro power was equally favourable (25units) whereas, in Australia natural gas and hydro-power used was equalled (20 units).Another fact worth noticing in this chart is France had used only half of the units of coal in comparison with Australia in the same year.

In 2000, coal was used considerably in Australia while the same method was used only 25 units in France .Nuclear power was enormously used in France (126 units) but not used in Australia .Natural gas was equally favourable by both countries (2 units).

To sum up, in general, it is noted that Australia had used only four methods of fuel sources whilst France had utilized five methods of fuel to manufacture electricity in both years.

Corrected Version

Note: Grammar errors in the student’s answer are marked in red.

Thanks again to Sabina.

When you are preparing for the IELTS Test it is essential that you don’t just rely on model answers to gauge your own capability. This is because you will very often miss the subtle errors that you are making which could cause you to lose marks in the IELTS Test. Model answers can be very helpful but to know how YOU are performing you will need your work to be assessed by a professional so you appreciate your own shortcomings and how to improve them.

To your IELTS success,

James
